Это выражение впервые вошло в обиход в США в 1980-х гг. в связи с постоянными сборами пожертвований для беженцев. В Великобритании имеются в виду частые показы телевизионных фильмов о массовом голоде и ужасных условиях жизни в некоторых районах Африки.
